Evaporative Cooling Water vs. Alcohol
In this lab we tested to see which was cooler water or alcohol, so we took a drop of alcohol on the back of one of our hands and a drop of water on the other hand to see which was cooler. it turns out the water was cooler due to the fact that water absorbs more heat than alcohol does.
Water tension and cohesion, water on a penny.
in this lab we had to count the number of drops a penny can hold before the water spilled, we guessed how many drops the penny could hold my guess was 40. its actually 29 drops. The reason it can hold that many drops was because of cohesion. Cohesion allows water molecules to be attracted to each other. So it allowed a little more water to be on the penny.
Surface Tension. Water on wax paper
We had to add drops of water on to wax paper and see what happens. What we saw was that the water didn't imediately go through the wax paper. It stayed on top of the wax paper for a while then it slowly went through the wax paper. my guess is that since the wax paper is a little more laminated and more thicker than normal paper thats probably why it took forever to go through.
Surface Tension. Paper clip on water challenge
Cohesion allows the surface of the water to have better tension, allowing some things to stay on the water's surface, do to surface tension. the challenge was to get a paper clip to float on top of the water, i couldnt do it, but it was done by others.
Adhesion, with graduated cylinders
We put water in a graduated cylinder and observed the meniscus. The reason is because of adhesion. Adhesion is when water sticks to other materials. In this the water is sticking to the surface of the cylinder.
Capillary Action. Water and paper towels
what you do in this lab is put some water in a cup and nothing in another cup then roll up some paper towel, then put one end in the water cup and the other end in the cup without water. in a few days the water should have completely transfer to the empty cup, you can also see the water tranfering over time. this was all posible because of capillary action, the combination of cohesion and adhesion. it allow water to go through certain things like a paper towel.
